PETITION: Draft Jim Riddle to the USDA

*UPDATE: Fair Food Fight has direct access to an advisor for the Obama USDA transition team. Our hope is to get this petition in front of the team soon, so that Jim Riddle will be considered for a post like Agricultural Marketing Service which has direct control over the USDA's National Organic Program.

Make your voice heard! Restore integrity to the National Organic Program by drafting Jim Riddle to the USDA.

Tom Vilsack, former governor of Iowa, has been tapped to be the next USDA secretary. While Fair Food Fight disagrees with that choice, we hope the president elect is still open to considering green and change-oriented advocates for lower, USDA posts.

Advocates like Jim Riddle. Riddle is a longtime champion of organic/sustainable farmers and strong standards, so consumers know what "organic" means from the produce aisle to the dairy cooler to the body care aisle. Take a look at his resume, and sign our petition, please.

Basic information about Jim Riddle

* Jim Riddle's Resume

* Jim Riddle's Personal Statement to the Obama USDA

PLEASE READ AND SIGN

We, the undersigned, whole-heartedly endorse Jim Riddle to serve in President-Elect Barack Obama's Department of Agriculture. We value his experience as Chair and Executive Committee member of the National Organic Standards Board, University of Minnesota' Organic Outreach Coordinator, and his instrumental role in the development of standards and documents that heavily influenced the National Organic Program's Final Organic Rule.

Riddle has worked with 19 State Department of Agricultures and the following agencies: Agricultural Marketing Service; Economic Research Service; Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service; Agricultural Research Service; Natural Resource Conservation Service; Risk Management Agency; National Ag Library; Foreign Ag Service; National Ag Statistics Service; and Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education.

Without leaders like Jim Riddle, who've sparked real change in Rural America with his work in organics and sustainability, the next Department of Agriculture will be caught flatfooted while the food and agriculture sectors continue to merge and transform at astonishing rates over the next four years. Therefore, we hope to see Jim Riddle in a prominent position in your administration where his talents can help Rural America and the entire country capitalize on these coming changes.

Sincerely,

  1. Erik Esse, Director, Local Fair Trade Network

I am lucky enough to live in the land of Oregon Tilth, a real organic certification agency (unlike, unfortunately, USDA Organic). I don't know much about Mr Riddle, but the simple fact that he is NOT part of the industrial agriculture cabal is enough to recommend him to me. Food is too important to let the corporations take over. They have proved again and again that they have utterly NO concern for the health and well-being of their consumers; THEY ARE NOT TO BE TRUSTED. Please, let us hear some news about your administration considering some names that are NOT completely co-opted by industrial food!

Organic and sustainable agriculture will boost the failing economy in so many ways, including 1) improving nutrition which will reduce the needs for health care, 2) increasing local jobs and local farmers, which will promote a healthy, local economy, and 3) reducing carbon emissions and in turn reducing the global warming phenomenon.

Our countries increasing obesity, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism, and other afflictions come from the food we eat. And thus can be directly attributed to the policies of the USDA and FDA. These policies have little to do with what is healthy for the nations people but rather how much profit large corporations can make. For example, they promote wide spread use of soy totally ignoring the toxic effect that unfermented soy has on the thyroid. Wheat also has a toxic effect on humans and leads to celiac disease. I “factory farming” the use of grain to “finish feed” cattle causes them to have a high omega-6 to omega-3 ratio. Omega-6 is an inflammatory agent, high levels of which are associated with increased incidence of cancers in humans eating that beef. The anti-fat dogma that has become “gospel” in the media has caused pregnant women to avoid saturated fat just at the time the fetal brain is developing. Thus the child is born autistic - I know of one specific case of this and am sure that it was not just a fluke. I hope that you will consider Jim Riddle for your Secretary of Agriculture. We need to stop poisoning and even killing your citizens in the name of profit for a few big companies. An appointment of someone not tied to the “industry” would be a big step in better health for everyone.

The Obama campaign ran with the promise of using good science to address the issue of climate change - it would be a contradiction to not use good science when determining our country's agriculture policy as well. The FDA's own scientists called for more study of GMOs before allowing them into the food supply, but were dismissed because the FDA was run by Monsanto. PLEASE don't let profit-motivated industry make decisions that impact the whole nation's health.

Maintaining high standards related to "Organic" products and production is nothing less than essential. Without them, I am left to wonder what is in my food. Likewise, the people of the United States NEED to learn more about what non-processed, healthy food really is so they can make healthy choices for themselves and their families. I strongly support Jim Riddle's appointment to the USDA and urge others to do the same.

We need someone who will represent the needs and concerns of the farmers and impoverished communities who are often most hurt by the predominantly agro-business contemporary food system. Riddle has many of the credentials that lead me to believe he would be a champion for change and a healthier food system which was not based on ludicrous ethanol subsidies but on transparency, healthy choices (both for people and the environment), and a more level playing field.

As an organic farmer for the last ten years, I have been frustrated by USDA programs and how they seem geared towards large scale conventional opeations and subsidies. Existing policies seem stuck in the mire of past agricultural priorities. I was struck during the debates about the recent farm bill that a new era is dawning where consumers are getting involved because it is about food again not just agricultural policy. The advocacy of people like Jim Riddle, a leader in the organic movement, is crucial to put the emphasis back on food, people and farms and to begin to implement policies with these concerns in mind instead of biotech research, farm consolidation and cheap food and fuel. We have paid a high price for this focus already in terms of health, sustainability, local economy and control over our resources. It is high time for the organic and local movement to have a representative we can trust and respect to promote change within the USDA system.

  159. Elizabeth Asphodel, Homemaker
The USDA is an often overlooked area that we don't focus much on in terms of the "change" we are all so hopeful about, yet it is desperately in need of that change and hope. We need people on the inside who will uphold the principles that the USDA is supposed to stand for, and who will fight for a healthy, sustainable, compassionate food industry.

The USDA and FDA need to be completely overhauled. Only with progressive people in key position will there be any chance of this happening. I am happy to lend my voice in support of this petition for Jim Riddle to join the USDA. The Standard American Diet, otherwise known as S.A.D., is just that - it is sad. I hope that dietary recommendations can be revised as soon as possible and that the American people can be educated about better food choices. Organic food should be the norm; processed food should be processed right out of existence.

I have known Jim Ridle for fifteen years and I also worked at the Agricultural Marketing Service, which he is being drafted to lead, for five years. I can say without doubt or hesitation that Jim Riddle is one of the most honest, smart, hard working and life affirming people I have ever known. Quite simply, he is among the cream of the crop of the organic agricultural movement. More importantly, he has respect for all farmers, an intimate knowledge of agricultural production and marketing, and a deep, deep reverence for the environment. You needn't take my word for this - look at his resume. He is enormously qualified for this assignment and we as citizens would be exceptionally well served were he to take on this assignment.

Dear Mr. Obama, please keep your word to have representation for small family farms on your Ag team! Please Make sure Jim Riddle is a part of your administration. When I asked you directly at the barbecue in Eau Claire Wisconsin, the day before the democratic convention opened, if you would have people on your Ag team to stand for small family farms, you said YES! Last August Onwosi Odefa also gave you letters of agricultural support we had collected through a good number of small family farm house meetings in our area of Viroqua, Wisconsin. We would all appreciate your support to strengthen family life and family business through supporting small farm initiatives! We would all be thankful for the wise choice to change the present course of the big top down food and seed industry movement to bottom up support for long term local economic stability and health. Here's to hoping you also ask for help to create a family garden at your new home at White House too, for you and your sweet wife and children to have a space to relax in nature just outside your door. If you plant a hedge around your vegetable and flower garden, you could perhaps even have some privacy, too. Wishing you and your family much love and joy as you take on the tremendous responsibility of presidency. Thank you for your service. Sincerely, Adrienne
