Here's an interesting way to attack the mess created by containment feedlots (CAFOs) - skip the Ag Committee and address it as a health concern. Specifically, "ban many routine uses of antibiotics in farm animals in hopes of reducing the spread of dangerous bacteria in humans." That's what the Obama administration is looking to do, according to a New York Times article today.
As far as I know, CAFOs can't exist without the regular dosing of their inmates. Trapping animals (and their excrement) in such cramped conditions pretty much requires it. In fact, "The Union of Concerned Scientists has estimated that as much as 70 percent of antibiotics used in the United States is given to healthy chickens, pigs and cattle to encourage their growth or to prevent illnesses."
I think I just might ask my congressperson to back Rep. Slaughter's initative. How about you?

Can Natural Beef Be Sourced from a CAFO?
I've been pulled in a few different directions this week so Ithanks for blogging this story.
>As far as I know, CAFOs can't exist without the regular dosing of their inmates.
Me, too. Which is why I was curious to learn that Chipotle's All Natural (no antibiotic) beef came from a company that runs the largest CAFO in California. I'm trying to find out if that beef is actually sourced elsewhere, but it's certainly confusing at first glance.
I think your congressperson is probably already backing it, TM, but it's always worth a call. ;)
