Fair Food Fight would like to hear a round of rousing, wrestler applause for Linden Hills Co-op here in Minneapolis for reaching their goal of raising $1.5 million -- in less than 90 days. From the Linden Hills Co-op website:
We are delighted to announce that the co-op’s member loan drive has reached our goal of $1.5 million in committed loans from more than 200 co-op members! Linden Hills Co-op is moving in fall 2010 to a new larger location at 3815 Sunnyside Avenue.
In this crappy economic climate? One point five million clams? In less than three months? Are you freaking kidding me?
Look, I'm not afraid to admit it. I get...I get a little choked up, ok? No, no, I'll be fine. Just that...it says so much about Minneapolis, a town I adore. It's like the end...of It's a Wonderful Life, you know?...the whole town rallying for poor George Bailey...oh, man....and when his brother the war hero shows up?...that's the part that...ok, I need a minute...hold up...
BRAVO, LINDEN HILLS! Bravo, Minneapolis for being such staunch co-op town! Bravo, co-op members for standing behind your store!
(And Merry Christmas, you old Building and Loan!)

Bravo!
I have a special place in my heart for LHC, where I earned my coop chops back in the day. Nothing makes me more proud of all committed coop participants in Minneapolis than to see them grow and be supported in such a fantastic way. What great news to start my morning!
time and money
Isn't that impressive? I'm just blown away at how fast LHC raised that money. Not that Linden Hills is tapping the same community as Seward, but this fundraising effort does fall very close on the heels of Seward's own capital drive.
Minneapolis is obviously very eager to put some serious coin behind its co-ops.
Co-ops and capital
After working with Seward, Mississippi Market, Just Food and now Linden Hills Co-op on their member loan/investment drives, I can tell you that indeed our communities are more than thrilled to put their money where their mouths are (pun intended). We are unbelievably lucky to live where do with so many healthy co-ops to choose from. But this is happening all over the United States. Natural Food Co-ops' owners are motivated and passionate about investing in their stores. Go co-op!
